2025 ALERT for DURANGO AREA as Follows: US FOREST SERVICE – CSU … Durango, Colorado Fireshed – Wildfire Risk Reduction and Restoration. The Durango High-Risk Fireshed, is facing a very high to extreme wildfire hazard. This fireshed includes the City of Durango, Southern Ute Tribal Land, and the Florida River municipal watershed—all of which are at increased risk due to hazardous fuels buildup.
In 2002, Durango's Missionary Ridge Fire sourced Glowing Embers the size of Eggs, were Landing all over our Family Ranch, even though the Fire-Line was approx 5 miles away. We spent a Day and all Night dowsing water on Burning Embers. In the Vallecito Lake area, I remember seeing Large Burned Trees that had been ripped Out of the Ground, Lifted Hundreds of Feet in the Air from Tornado Like Thermals, and dropped unknown distances along and in the Lake. This fire caused more than $40 million in damages and 71,739 Acres Burned. We’ll never forget the Speed and Magnitude that was Observed. Fire spread half-way to Pagosa Springs in 2 Days.

IGNITION ZONES – Home and Property Proximity Areas are a Priority. Multiple Zones will be addressed per Combustion Potential. To increase your home’s chance of surviving a wildfire, choose fire-resistant building materials and limit the amount of flammable vegetation in the three home ignition zones. ROOFING AND VENTS – Class A fire-rated roofing products, such as composite shingles, metal, concrete, and clay tiles, offer the best protection. Inspect shingles or roof tiles and replace or repair those that are loose or missing to prevent ember penetration. Roof and attic vents should be screened to prevent ember entry. DECKS AND PORCHES – Never Store flammable materials underneath decks or porches. Remove dead vegetation and debris from under decks and porches and clean between deck board joints.
SIDING AND WINDOWS – Embers can collect in small nooks and crannies and ignite combustible materials; radiant heat from flames can crack windows. Use fire-resistant siding such as brick, fiber-cement, plaster, or stucco, and use dual-pane tempered glass windows. All Cracks / Crevices should be Sealed with proper Caulking. Consider Fire and Theft Resistant Doors and Window Shutters ... particularly for Seasonal Residences or those who Travel.
EMERGENCY RESPONDER ACCESS – Ensure your home and neighborhood has legible and clearly marked street names and numbers. Driveways should be at least 12 feet wide with a vertical clearance of 15 feet for emergency vehicle access. Explore Alternative Routes for Fire Dept. Equipment. Remove Obstructions around Hydrants or Access.
EVACUATION ROUTES – Of Critical Importance … Different Alternative Exits should be Predetermined! Transport Options for Elders, Children, Pets, or Livestock need to be well Planned.
EXPLORE FIRE DEPARTMENT CERTIFICATION for Home Insurance Reductions. Limit Potential Policy Cancellations. Have Inspection of Grades and Fire Truck Access … plus Power Lines, Falling Trees, or other Concerns.
WATER RESERVOIRS – Remember that Power Outages will be likely. Ponds, Stock Tanks, or Water Storage may require purchasing Separate Pumping Equipment. Plan for Urgent Extinguishment before Fire Departments arrive. (This saved some Homes in the LA Fire.) Have Hoses and Keep it Wet.
