This is a 1960's vintage, Paolo Soprani "Herzig Spezial", "C" System Chromatic Button Accordion. It is in excellent playing condition. There are 72 treble side buttons with 43 pitches. The all white treble buttons have a black dot, visible to the player, indicating the "black keys" as found on a piano. The bass side has 80 buttons laid out in the Stradella pattern (5 rows) with a dimpled button for the "C" bass. The treble side has two voices and two registers. The bass side has one voice. Treble side reeds are on 3 blocks, while the bass side has 4 rows.
There is no damage anywhere and the bellows are tight and show little to no wear. The bass strap is excellent and has a wheel style adjuster. The bellows straps are like new. New shoulder straps are included (not pictured).
As can be seen it the photos, the complete interior and the reed blocks are varnished, the reeds are rust free and the leather valves are in excellent condition. The reeds are both nailed to the blocks and waxed, in the Soprani tradition. An additional photo shows the soundboard and pallets which are also excellent.
An integrity test reveals a 40 second compression time (anything over 30 seconds is good, 40 seconds is very good). My new Beltuna, of a similar size, has a 45 second compression time.
The tuning is Musette, approximately 15 cents, by my ear. The tone and volume are as one would expect from a Paolo Soprani.
Weight is 15 pounds (6.8 kilos), without the shoulder straps.
It is, obviously, a pearlescent red celluloid color with red and gold bellows. The shoulder straps are all black.
The Paolo Soprani brand is one of the oldest in Italy and is known for high construction quality and reeds. This accordion is one of the last real Soprani's made prior to the factory being bought out by a conglomerate. The button board action is smooth and effortless, as is the bass side.
This accordion is an excellent entry level machine, or a lightweight accordion for an intermediate player. All reeds sound as they should, both sides. There are no grille fabric tears, no odors (in or out) and no celluloid garfs. Both the register switches operate as designed, and smoothly. Included with the accordion is a non-original carrying case in good condition.
Chromatic Button Accordions are difficult to find in the USA and offer significant advantages over Piano Accordions. Rare opportunity to acquire a quality piece at a good price. Introductory lesson included.
